Diabetes mellitus, or what we normally call diabetes, is a disease of the metabolism which causes excess blood sugar levels. The hormone known as insulin breaks down and transports sugar from your blood into your cells to be collected and then used for energy when required. When afflicted with diabetes, your body either doesn’t produce enough insulin on its own or it can’t efficiently use the insulin it does make because of its poor quality.

If untreated, then excess levels of sugar in the blood can cause damage to nerves, eyes, heart, kidneys and various other ancillary organs
