Of all the ways, means, mechanisms, and methods that people utilize in order to lose weight, running has to be in the top two, on average.  There are great reasons for why this is, reasons that are more or less understood by those who choose to run for weight loss.  But, there are many who do not attempt to run at all, and instead think that merely following a proper diet will give them the weight loss that they desire.

The best, most efficient way to lose weight is to combine a good diet and nutritional plan with proper exercise – like running. This post will point out why running will help you lose weight.

The Science Of Losing Weight – It’s All About Math

Well, it’s all about math and a bit of science, of course. The body’s weight is comprised of a few distinct portions: organs (including skin); muscles; bone; tissue; blood; water; and body fat.  With the exception of the last two, none of these can really be changed or modified for weight loss purposes.

Of those last two factors, body fat is the portion that we want to target.

To lose weight, you have to burn fat. To burn fat, you have to get your caloric intake to a level where you use up more calories than you consume. This forces your body to convert fat stores into energy, which makes you drop pounds over time.

Running – and nutrition for runners – are great ways to do that.

What Running Does To Your Body

So, if we know that creating a caloric deficit is the way to lose weight, then we have two options:

  1. Eat much, much less
  2. Eat right (not necessarily less) and run

The second option is almost always preferable. Running causes a caloric deficit by drastically ramping up the number of calories your body requires in order to function. This is because running takes effort, and effort requires energy. Therefore, more energy needed = more calories burned.

In short, when you participate in a running program, you are routinely forcing your body to consume more and more energy, which means more and more calories.  If you run often enough and at a certain level of effort, then your body will start to eat into your fat stores to get the energy it needs –which makes you slim down.

Remember how I said that body fat is really the only portion of your body’s total weight that you can routinely affect? Well, running does exactly that.

What are some other reasons you can think of to persuade others that running is good for losing weight?
